A sodium hypochlorite generator is a device that produces a sodium hypochlorite solution by electrolyzing saltwater 

(sodium chloride solution). This device utilizes chemical reactions during the electrolysis process to decompose saltwater 

into hypochlorous acid, hydrogen gas, and sodium hydroxide.

The basic principle is as follows:

Electrolytic cell: The sodium hypochlorite generator usually includes an electrolytic cell with electrodes inside. A typical electrolytic 

cell is usually composed of an anode and a cathode.

Saline solution: Put an aqueous solution containing sodium chloride (table salt) into an electrolytic cell. When the current passes 

through the electrolytic cell, the electrode triggers the electrolysis process in water.

Electrolysis process: During the electrolysis process, when the current passes through a saline solution, the reaction on the 

cathode (negative electrode) and anode (positive electrode) leads to the decomposition of water and salt.

a. At the cathode: water decomposes into hydrogen (H2) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH). b. At the anode: The chloride ions 

(Cl -) in sodium chloride (NaCl) are oxidized to hypochlorous acid (ClO -). These hypochlorite ions then combine with the 

generated hydrogen ions to form hypochlorite (HClO, hypochlorite).

Collection and mixing: The sodium hypochlorite generator collects the generated sodium hypochlorite solution, usually with 

a specific collection device in the equipment. Then, this solution can be mixed with water to achieve the desired concentration 

and pH value.

This electrolysis method can generate sodium hypochlorite solution when needed for disinfection and sterilization. This solution has disinfection and sterilization effects and is widely used in medical, food processing, water treatment and other fields. However, caution is still necessary when operating and using such equipment, following the correct operating steps and safety measures to ensure safety and effectiveness.
