The effective disinfectant ingredient of sodium hypochlorite is the same as that of chlorine disinfection, both of which are hydrolyzed hypochlorous acid (HOCl). HOCl is a very small neutral molecule that can not only act on cell walls and virus shells, but also has small and uncharged hypochlorous acid molecules that can penetrate into the body of bacteria (viruses) and undergo oxidation reactions with organic polymers such as bacterial (virus) proteins, nucleic acids, and enzymes, thereby killing pathogenic microorganisms. Although OCl - also has bactericidal ability, However, with negative charge, it is difficult to approach the surface of negatively charged bacteria, and the bactericidal ability is much worse than that of HOCl [9]. Production practice has shown that the lower the pH value, the stronger the disinfection effect, proving that HOCl is the main factor in disinfection. Secondly, hypochlorous acid will further decompose to form new ecological oxygen [O]. The strong oxidizing nature of new ecological oxygen causes denaturation of proteins and other substances on bacteria and viruses, leading to the death of pathogenic microorganisms [10]. At the same time, the chlorine contained in sodium hypochlorite solution combines with cell membrane proteins to form nitrogen and chlorine compounds, which interfere with cell metabolism and ultimately cause bacterial death; Finally, the chloride ions produced by the hydrolysis of hypochlorous acid can significantly alter the osmotic pressure of bacteria and pathogens, causing their cells to lose activity. It is generally believed that the oxidation of hypochlorous acid is the main mechanism of its disinfection.

The main reason is that the hydrolysis of sodium hypochlorite in water is slower than that of chlorine gas, and it is alkaline and has a more sustainable disinfection ability;

-Compared with chlorine gas disinfection, sodium hypochlorite has lower safety risks, does not pose any leakage hazards to human life safety, and does not produce toxic or harmful by-products. Studies have shown that during sodium hypochlorite disinfection, dichloroacetic acid (DCAA) in the factory water is lower than that in liquid chlorine disinfection, while trichloroacetic acid (TCAA) is basically equivalent. When sodium hypochlorite is used for disinfection, trihalomethanes (THMs) in the factory water are lower than liquid chlorine, and carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) is basically equivalent to the two. Overall, the amount of sodium hypochlorite disinfection by-products is lower than that of liquid chlorine;
